"Knowledge is of two kinds... We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it."
Samuel Johnson 1775

I have long been a believer of the above statement. The list of books that follow are ones that (in my mind) belong on the book shelf of an environmental professional. Some will be of interest to scientist in other fields such as geology, hydrology, microbiology, and chemistry. Most of these books are not necessarily meant to be read from cover to cover, but rather used selectively to solve specific problems encountered by the physical scientist. Some are pure reference books that act a sources of supporting data and information.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics 1996-1997
A Ready-Reference Book of Chemical and Physical Data (77th Ed); David R. Lide, H. P. R., Phd Frederikse; Hardcover; $88.00

  • If you were going to have just one book for technical support, this book (generally called just the CRC) would be it. Indispensable information for the physical/chemical/biological scientist.

Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook :
by Robert H. Perry (Editor), Don W. Green 7th Edition Hardcover, 2240 pages List: $125.00

  • In some ways this book is similar to the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, in that a considerable portion is devoted to data tables some of which are unique to Perry's. But unlike the CRC, it also has text sections explaining many engineering processes, with tables and graphs to aid in the design process. Anyone involved in the remediation portion of the environmental business should have a copy of this. An update has just come out this year.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Hazardous Properties of Chemical Substances
by Pradyot Patnaik Hardcover List: $109.95

  • In a area with a huge number of books, this one has good depth and breadth of coverage for chemical types, is well organized, and of reasonable size and cost. There are more massive, complete, and more expensive sources of data of this type. But, for a quick check that is handy on the bookshelf, this is a good choice.

CHEMISTRY

General Chemistry
by Linus Pauling Paperback List: $19.95

  • This is not the most recent of books, but for basic chemistry it is an excellent source. Mr. Pauling originated much of Twentieth Century Chemistry on top of which he is a decent writer. Basic explanations from such an individual have a clarity that is obfuscated by those that follow and try to appear original in their own right. As a place to start on basic explanations for chemical problems, this is hard to beat.

The Nature of the Chemical Bond and the Structure of Molecules and Crystals; An Introduction to Modern Structural Chemistry. by Linus Carl Pauling Third Edition Hardcover List: $65.00

  • Once again, not the most recent of books, but a definite classic in chemical literature. Many valuable peripheral areas are touched upon in this book on the chemical bond. It has one of the most cogent explanations of Quantum Mechanics that I have come across.

Advanced Inorganic Chemistry
by F. Albert Cotton, Geoffrey Wilkinson, Frank Alber Cotton 5th Edition Hardcover, 1455 pages List: $69.95

  • The standard book on inorganic chemistry. From the perspective of a person who is involved with the application of chemistry to problems in the "real world" (vs. laboratory manipulations), the value of this book is in discussions of the behavior of different compounds of specific elements under various conditions. This is in addition, to all the theoretical stuff.

Inorganic Chemistry : Principles of Structure and Reactivity
by James E. Huheey, Ellen A. Keiter, Richard L. Keiter 4th Edition Hardcover, 888 pages List: $84.38

  • This book is organized a bit different than Cotton and Wilkinson and offers some lucid explanations of electrochemistry and coordination chemistry. It also has sections devoted to the "practical" chemistry of inorganic compounds.

Intermolecular and Surface Forces
by Jacob N. Israelachvili 2nd Edition Hardcover List: $56.00

  • The transport of contaminants in a groundwater system or soil matrix is dependent upon the interactions of the contaminant with the geologic matrix. This book is a lucid and usable tool for understanding those interactions. It discusses van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions. Adsorption, solvation and micelle systems are explained with practical examples using graphics that can be applied to other problems that you may encounter. Considering, price, size, functionality, and detail of treatment; this is the best book on the subject I have seen.

Handbook of Chemical Engineering Calculations
(McGraw-Hill Chemical Engineering) by Nicholas P. Chopey (Editor) 2nd Edition Hardcover List: $74.95 -- Amazon.com Price: $74.95

  • Practical examples to aid you in the application of chemical engineering principles to problem resolution and system design. It is meant for use in the chemical engineering industry, but there are many areas of practical use for the design of multimedia environmental remediation systems.

Physical Chemistry Source Book
by Sybil P. Parker (Editor) Hardcover, 406 pages List: $49.50

  • This is a single source of comprehensible explanations for physical chemical phenomena. It includes sections on thermodynamics, kinetics, surface chemistry, transport properties (like viscosity), and electrochemistry. This book is designed to be understandable while guiding you to the level of detail required to resolve the issue you art trying to resolve.

GEOCHEMISTRY

The Geochemistry of Natural Waters : Surface and Groundwater Environments
by James I. Drever 3rd Edition Hardcover, 480 pages List: $62.50

  • The best single source on the subject. This book covers all types of natural waters and the geochemical reactions they undergo. Thermodynamics, kinetics, redox reactions, and general chemical equilibria; are all covered in an understandable and useful fashion. It includes sections on the impact of microbiological activity.

Physical and Chemical Hydrogeology
by Patrick A. Domenico, Franklin Schwartz Hardcover, 824 pages List: $89.00

  • Another outstanding book, its geochemical coverage is not quite as extensive as "The Geochemistry of Natural Waters", but it runs a strong second. In addition, it offers full coverage of physical hydrodynamics (including heat flow) and modeling systems.

Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry : An Introduction
by F. Donald Bloss Reprint Edition Paperback List: $30.00

  • This book is a classic, that is why it has been republished in this paper back version (originally published in 1971). In addition to crystallography, the book has a very good explanation of "crystal field theory" (the interaction of the outer electrons of transition metals with adjacent ligands) and discusses the effects of all this on multiple physical properties of materials.

Geochemistry of Hydrothermal Ore Deposits
by Hubert Lloyd Barnes (Editor) 3rd Edition Hardcover List: $115.00

  • Another classic, just reissued in its third edition. Beyond ore deposits, this book contains information germane to the chemistry of groundwater, complexation, and mass transport in a wide variety of subsurface environments.

Introduction to Geochemistry
by Konrad B. Krauskopf, Dennis K. Bird 3rd Edition Hardcover List: $59.40

  • For years, the standard introduction to geochemistry.

HYDROGEOLOGY

Physical and Chemical Hydrogeology
by Patrick A. Domenico, Franklin Schwartz Hardcover, 824 pages List: $89.00

  • A great hydrogeology book, it offers full coverage of all aspects of physical hydrodynamics (including heat flow). There is a good discussion of modeling systems. In addition, it includes geochemical coverage that is not quite as extensive as "The Geochemistry of Natural Waters", but it runs a strong second. A lot of relevant and usable information on groundwater in one package

Principles of Groundwater Engineering
by William C. Walton Hardcover List: $84.95

  • An exhaustive treatment of aquifer hydrology. Confined and water table aquifers are discussed in detail. Withdrawal, injection, an boundary conditions are all examined. There is a very detailed discussion of modeling techniques, application, and selection. The best parts of this book (in my opinion) are the appendices. There are over 140 pages of information on groundwater, aquifer hydrodynamics, geologic characteristics of different aquifers, contaminant characteristics, and modeling. I know of no other equally deep and broad compilation of such information. This book is worth having for the appendices alone.

Dynamics of Fluids in Porous Media
by Jacob Bear Paperback, 764 pages List: $19.95

  • This is a very technical treatment of hydrogeology. It covers matrix properties, fluid transport, anisotropic media, unconfined flow, immiscible fluids, diffusion, and much more. There are equations on every page, but there are also graphics that are helpful in understanding and useful in application. If you have a specific question or problem you need help with in the realm of aquifer hydrology, this is the place to go.

Groundwater
by R. Allan Freeze Hardcover List: $86.67

  • Long the standard introductory text on groundwater.

Groundwater Hydrology
by Herman Bouwer Hardcover, 480 pages List: $128.50

  • This is an exceptionally lucid treatment of hydrogeology. It covers all the standard hydrodynamic issues, as well as unconfined aquifers, vadose zone dynamics, and infiltration/evapotranspiration,. Practical issues such as well design, subsidence, and water quality are also covered. Some of the issue touched upon in this book, just are not found any where else.

Groundwater and Wells
by Fletcher G. Driscoll 2nd Edition Hardcover List: $65.75

  • The premier source for information concerning the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of groundwater wells. All aspect of well hardware such as well screens and pumps are discussed in detail. There are also treatments of general hydrogeologic issues.

Dense Chlorinated Solvents in Porous and Fractured Media : Model Experiments
by Friedrich Schwille, James F. Pankow English language Edition Hardcover List: $89.95

  • A classic in the field. The photographs are incredible.

Cadillac Desert : The American West and Its Disappearing Water
by Marc Reisner Rev Rep Edition Paperback, 582 pages List: $14.95

  • This is not a technical book. Rather it is an examination of how important groundwater resources are and in the American West at least how limited and fragile they are. Perhaps most interesting is the description of how these valuable resources are allocated. Who benefits in unprecedented fashion, and who has their "ox gored", the dynamics of the process are enlightening.

MICROBIOLOGY

Microbes and Man
by John Raymond Postgate 3rd Edition Paperback, 297 pages List: $17.95

  • This is essentially and laymen's introduction to microbiology. Its clearly written, understandable, and even enjoyable. In the process you get a very good review of microbiological organisms, their environments of choice, and what they can do. A great place to start in an understanding microbiology.

Practical Manual of Groundwater Microbiology
by D. Roy Cullimore Hardcover List: $64.95

  • The primary focus of this book is on "biofouling" of wells. However, in the process you get a reasonable review of a wide variety of bacteria that populate groundwater systems. As well as the wide variety of chemical and redox conditions under which they exist.

Microbiology
by Bernard D. Davis, Renato Dulbecco, Herman N. Eisen, Harold Ginsberg 4th Edition Hardcover List: $89.95

  • This book is written for professionals in the medical profession. Its value (to the environmental professional) lies in its introduction into bacterial physiology, and the reviews of a wide variety of specific bacterial types. In a nut-shell a good source for a technical introduction to bacteriology that has a strong practical component.

Ground-Water Microbiology and Geochemistry
by Francis H. Chapelle Hardcover List: $84.95

Microbial Mineral Recovery
by Henry L. Ehrlich, Corale L. Brierley (Editor) Hardcover, 454 pages List: $68.95

  • There are a group of bacteria that are classed as chemolithotrophs. These bacteria "make a living" through the exploitation of various chemical reactions. They are responsible for generating "acid mine drainage" emitting from abandoned and active mine sites. Aside from their intrinsic application (for bioleaching or ores), it is becoming more apparent that many of these bacteria have metabolic systems that can be exploited for the biodegradation of man made chemicals (PCBs, Chlorinated Solvents, Pesticides, etc.) that are recalcitrant to the activity of what would be termed "normal" bacteria. The book also does a good job of discussing the phenomena of biosorption, i.e. the process by which bacteria can remove heavy metals from water.

Biochemical Adaptation
by Peter W. Hochachka, George Somero Paperback, 537 pages List: $37.50

  • How do organisms adapt to extremes of chemistry, heat and pressure (like the chemolithotrophs)? This book is an examination of the biochemical adaptations that organisms use to survive in extreme environments. This is the realm from which current researches are finding new microbial systems to attack the most recalcitrant of man made chemical compounds.

The following four books are the results of recent seminars or conferences. Every thing else in the bookstore has been generated by an author (or authors) who have focused on their respective subjects. The advantage there, is depth and breadth of treatment, and coherence of thought. Seminar publication consists of a series of individual papers, that are most general site specific. Depth, breadth, and coherence on the subject matter is absent. However, it is a source of the most recent information in the field. So---what follows are a few important examples.

    Bioremediation of Inorganics
by Robert E. Hinchee (Editor), Jeffrey L. Means (Editor), David R. Burris Volume 10 Hardcover List: $54.95

    Intrinsic Bioremediation (Bioremediation, 3(1))
by Robert E. Hinchee (Editor), John T. Wilson (Editor) Hardcover List: $59.95

MANAGEMENT

Sound technical tools and good advice are what you will find below.

Balance Sheet Basics : Financial Management for Non-Financial Managers
by Ronald C. Spurga Reissue Edition Paperback

  • This is a small simple book, meant for the use of people without an MBA. In simple understandable terms it will take you through what you need to know for knowledgeable financial management of a business. If you have bottom line responsibility of any kind of business, you should read this or some other book like it. The down side is, it is out of print, and it may take Amazon.com a month or two to find you a copy. Its good enough, that I have listed it in- spite of that handicap.

Fair, Square, and Legal : Safe Hiring, Managing & Firing Practices to Keep You & Your Company Out of Courtrt
by Donald H. Weiss Revised Hardcover, 358 pages List: $27.95

  • The title is self explanatory. The book is written for business managers and is designed to help you avoid legal pit falls associated with recruiting, hiring, firing, harassment, discipline, promotions, and others. You do not have to be specialized in personnel management to understand and make use of this material.

The Ten-Day MBA

  • The book provides a good introduction into the craft of forming international business arrangements.

JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT

Here, my admonition in the introduction to this page about books that are not meant to be read cover to cover is no longer applicable. These books have been selected because most are exceptional reads, and those that don't flow as smoothly as one would like are still worth the trouble for their content.

The Star Rover
by Jack London Paperback List: $21.00

  • A science fiction novel (and a good one) by the author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang.

The Prize : The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power
by Daniel Yergin Reissue Edition Paperback List: $16.00

  • A well written and very readable (one of those books that is hard to put down) story of how the oil business came to be. This discovery and exploitation of cheap and accessable energy is the process that has come to define our industrial society. Aside from the specifics of oil, this book serves to illustrate how world changing technologies are developed and exploited. A subject germane to those who are viewing these words.

God : A Biography
by Jack Miles Rpt Edition Paperback List: $15.00

  • A review of the Old Testemant with God considered as a literary character. The most telling concept is the social power gained from the incorporation in a monotheistic God of all the complexity seen in mankind. Versus having separate Gods to represent different emotions, activity, and responsibility. Incorporation of this diversity in a single supreme being is one of the chief things that makes the Old Testemant a core component of Western Thought.

The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind
by Julian Jaynes Reissue Edition Paperback, 491 pages List: $16.95

  • A most thought provoking book, deservedly reprinted. Using Western Literature, primarily Homer and the Old Testament, Mr. Jaynes makes a convincing case for a dramatic change in the way Humans think, beginning about 2,000 BC. Prior to that time we were intelligent, but acted in an almost autotomic fashion through "voices" that came from a now silent portion of our brains. Schizophrenia is a remnant of that voice in our time. Homers Ilad is from the "voices" time, while the Odyssey is a chronical from only a few hundred years later, in which modern man, without his guiding "voices", has emerged. In contrast to Jack Miles interpretation of the Old Testament (see God A Biography above), Mr. Jaynes views the Old Testament as a written chronicle of this dramatic transition. Considering the devlopments in the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics since this book was written (1976), it is probably of more import now than then.

Jude the Obscure
by Thomas Hardy Reprint Edition Paperback List: $7.95

  • This is a novel of human striving, passion, and societies indifference to the individual. When published in 1895, this book caused such an uproar that Thomas Hardy (a great English novelist) never wrote another novel (just poetry).

A History of Western Philosophy and Its Connection With Political and Social Circumstances from the Earliest Times to the Present Day
by Bertrand Russell, 3d Earl Russell Paperback List: $22.00

  • Betrand Russell was a penultimate materialist (we are meat machines with no soul, no life after death, death is simply oblivion for ever). His response to that philosophy was an outstanding out pouring of books. This is one of the best reviews of western philosophy available. It is readable, clear, entertaining, and comprehensive. This is an introduction into philosophy that is not boring or stuffy.

The Moral Animal : Why We Are the Way We Are : The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology
by Robert Wright, Luann Walther (Editor) Reprint Edition Paperback List: $14.00

  • Using recent advances in evolutionary theory, Mr. Wright has generated an insightful book on human relationships. This is not a technical book on genetics, but a book about who we are as humans. Husbands, wives, and children will not view each other the same way after having read this. While not intended for that genra, this qualifies as a "self help" book.

Johnny Got His Gun
by Dalton Trumbo Reprint Edition Paperback List: $10.95

  • First published in 1939 this novel about the effects of war on a young man is a strong statement about the costs of war to the individual.

The Birth of the Modern : World Society 1815-1830
by Paul Johnson Reprint Edition Paperback List: $20.00

  • A thought provoking book about the genesis of our modern society. In many ways we have more in common with the people of 1830, than they had with the people of 1780. The industrial revolution, modern art, modern transport, nihilistic uncertainty, and pants (for men) were all part of what came out of this dynamic time period.

Intellectuals
by Paul Johnson Reprint Edition Paperback List: $15.00

  • An entertaining review of the lives and thoughts of intellectuals over the past century. His emphasis is on the concept of the intellectual (a recent characterization) as well as how these people behave in their private lives.

March of Folly : From Troy to Vietnam
by Barbara W. Tuchman Reissue Edition Paperback, 447 pages List: $15.00

  • This book examines repeated examples of "bone headed" behavior by governments and people that is contrary to their own interests. History turning events are the consequence of such behavior. In the process this gives you an interesting review of a great deal of history in a painless format.

The Devil Drives : A Life of Sir Richard Burton
by Fawn McKay Brodie Reprint Edition Paperback List: $12.95

  • Fawn Brodie was a historian who specialized in writing psychological based biographies. She unfortunately passed away prematurely in 1981 shortly after completing a biography of Richard Nixon. This book is about Richard Burton. He was an adventurer, explorer, writer, interpreter, and a brilliant linguist. He was the first westerner to make the pilgrimage to Mecca by traveling undetected with a group of Arabs (detection would have meant instant death). This is an interesting biography of a very interesting man.

New Lies for Old : The Communist Strategy of Deception and Disinformation
by Anatoliy Golitsyn Hardcover List: $22.95

  • This one is for you conspiracy fans. It's a good one. Mr. Golitsyn is an ex-KGB agent who defected in the late 1960's and in 1968 wrote the essence of this book (which was published in 1984). His basic premise is that the current course of Russia (Soviet Union) was laid out in the late 1950s. The collapse of the Soviet Union is all part of their plan to ultimately conquer the West (remember this was written 20 years before that collapse occurred...HMMM..).

A Prayer for Owen Meany : A Novel
by John Irving Reissue Edition Mass Market Paperback List: $6.99

  • A novel about predestination and fate that is warm, funny and tragic. Its hard to put this one down, it ought to be worth a few belly laughs and some deep thought when your done.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions & the Madness of Crowds
by Charles MacKay Reprint Edition Paperback, 740 pages List: $14.00

  • Greed, deception, and mania. Human nature is a wondrous thing. This book was first published in 1841, and its descriptions of human folly are still germane today. A description of spectacular schemes whose bubble always burst. Is it applicable to today's (3/8/97) stock market?

Sardonic Humor of Ambrose Bierce
by Ambrose Bierce Paperback List: $6.95

  • Ambrose Bierce was an acute observer of the Human condition. The verbal brilliance exhibited in this book originated largely from short pieces originally published in magazines of his time (The dislike of his verbal victims made it hard for him to publish in books). Bad poets, bad novelists, politicians, corruption, and hypocrisy are his normal victims. Funny, entertaining and thought provoking.
